President of the UFC, Dana White, is apparently changing his view on womens MMA. In the past White has down talked womens MMA and showed absolutely no interest in promoting womens fighting. Back in 2007 White said during an interview “I’m not a huge fan of women fighting. Period.”, leaving the door closed to many women fighters who would love a chance to fight in the most popular fight promotion in the world, The UFC.

Now, thankfully, White seems to be considering making an exception. In Toronto during the UFC 94 St. Pierre vs. Penn 2 Press Tour, White said he would be willing to “Test the Waters” with womens MMA

White said, “Gina Carano is a Star, and I think she’s talented. I think she has all the tools, so what I’m willing to do is bring Gina into the WEC. We could do fights whenever there’s a challenge for Gina. That’s how I’ll test the waters and she how it goes.”

With this remark from White, it is very possible that we, the MMA fans, will eventually get that chance to see Gina Carano vs. Chris “Cyborg” Santos. A fight that could be the biggest womens fight in history.

On Tuesday, Fedor Emelianenko and his management teamed voiced a desire to set up a co -promoted Event with the UFC, M1 and Affliction where Fedor would go up against the new UFC Heavyweight Champ, Brock Lesnar. This is a fight that millions of fans across the globe would love to see. Fedor is considered by many to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world and Brock Lesnar just shocked the world in his defeat of the legendary Randy Couture in UFC 91. Although this would be a dream fight for many of the fans, the M1 and Affliction folks have reservations that the UFC will go for this co-promotion proposal. Here is a quote from the M1 management.

“It is the position of M-1 that the UFC has adopted an anti-Fedor policy because multiple attempts to sign him have not been fruitful,” read the prepared release. “For a company that has tried to market itself as the number one promotion in the world, they are unable to accept the fact that the number one fighter in the world does not reside on its roster of contracted fighters.

“We believe that the UFC has determined that it’s much more inexpensive for them to use their marketing resources to use smoke and mirrors to brand a fighter as the pound-for-pound best as opposed to actually paying the pound-for-pound best what he is truly worth on the open market.”

These are big words. I hope for the sport of MMA that the UFC steps up and takes this challenge to prove M1, Affliction and most importantly the MMA fans that they are signing and promoting the best fighters in the world. I also want to see Fedor fight Lesnar, don’t you?

MMA is one of the sexiest sports on the market. In an unscientific survey of young adults (17-20) they stated that MMA is sexy. Young ladies love the men in shorts and really loved the tight fighting MMA shorts. Guys as you know loved the ring card girls and felt that overall there was something sexy about female fighters.

Young adults who watched MMA events on television thought that the commercials associated with MMA were some of the sexiest sports advertisements on television. Sex sells and this fact will help put dollars into MMA. The action and excitement of the event according to those surveyed added sexiness to the events. Overwhelmingly those surveyed stated that attending MMA events or watching on television were great date night events.

Marcus Davis

UFC 93 will be taking place on January 17th out of Dublin Ireland. Marcus Davis and Chris Lytle are scheduled to fight, however it may not be your typical MMA fight. Marcus Davis is challenging Chris Lytle to keep the fight standing. Here’s a quote from Davis:

“Chris Lytle and I want to fight each other … He’s expressed that he wants to fight me. I’ve expressed that I want to fight him. We like each other, we respect each other, but we want to have that fight. And my pitch to Chris is, ‘The first guy that starts grappling is a pussy, so let’s not do that. Let’s just stand up and just beat the hell out of each other. If we get in a clinching scenario, and somebody wants to throw somebody or whatever, go ahead and do it. But let’s not try to finish it on the ground. Let’s stand up, and let’s bang it out.”

Will Chris Lytle accept this challenge and avoid being a “pussy”? Or will he ignore Davis’s talk and take the fight wherever he needs to for the win?
