In a recent quote from Dan Henderson, it seems he is a little disturbed by Brock Lesnar’s quick, almost instantaneous, leap to the top of UFC’s Heavyweight Ranks. Here is the quote from Hendo:
“He’s 3-1 and he’s the UFC champion. It kind of diminishes the value of the belt a little bit.”
I think many fighters who have been training and fighting for years, working their way up the ladder to get a title shot may be a bit irritated that someone like Brock Lesnar can be catapulted to the top and instantly be regarded as a great fighter. Unfortunately life is not fair. The UFC saw that Brock Lesnar had the fighting potential to be a good MMA fighter and the persona to be an even bigger UFC star. So, the UFC gave him a shot and it paid off huge for them.
Believe it or not, MMA is an entertainment business. Is Brock Lesnar the best heavyweight in the world? I don’t believe so, but he is now a huge star and he will sell tickets and Pay Per View. Look at what Kimbo Slice accomplished and he isn’t even half the fighter that Brock Lesnar is. If the UFC wants to keep growing they will do the things needed to continue to make the most money possible. Brock Lesnar is helping them to do that.
